Our Deerhurst care home team is proud to announce that they have received the Dementia Care Matters Quality of Life award, for the fifth year running! And more importantly, have retained the highest level, ‘Level 1’ for exceptional person-centred dementia care.
This is an outstanding result because, according to Dementia Care Matters, only 1% of care homes within the UK achieve the award and of those there are only 14 ‘Level 1’ homes in the UK.
Deerhurst is a Dementia Care Matters Butterfly Service home, meaning they are achieving a recognised national standard in dementia care, providing person-centred and relationship focused dementia care.
Observations from Dementia Care Matters’ audit report:
- “Deerhurst is a home that is filled with love with the ‘person’ central to the focus of the team.
- Lots of loving moments and kindness.
- An opportunity exists in every corner of the home for people to engage in different, meaningful occupation – washing up, hairdressing, nursing dolls, dancing and singing or looking at reminiscence items.”
Sheena Wylie, Associate Nurse Consultant, Dementia Care Matters, involved with awarding Deerhurst the ‘Level 1’ rating, said:
“The whole team deserve huge congratulations – this is really impressive. The commitment and enthusiasm for this approach remains strong across the team, and despite making the Butterfly approach look effortless, the amount required to maintain this must not be underestimated.”
Lesley Hobbs, Manager for Deerhurst Care Home says:
“In 2016 our scores averaged ‘Level 1’, with our specialist area in the home for people living with dementia excelling. This year we have achieved ‘Level 1’ for every area within the home which demonstrates that we are committed to improving quality of life for every person that we support. We are all so proud.”
